Welcome to ALF Summer at Heartwood ALC in Atlanta, GA

Do you want to train to become an Agile Learning Facilitator? Are you looking to support self-directed learners in both individualizing their education and building healthy community? Are you interested in the intersection of Agile tools, consent based decision making, and self-directed education? Want to find tools and practices to adapt for your own education based initiative? This opportunity may be for you.

Who is this for?

  • This event is for anyone desiring to facilitate or support self-directed learners and learning communities. It is for parents, current facilitators, aspiring facilitators and other community members. Whether you're connected to a specific young learner, a specific learning community or a general concept, this training will facilitate a discovery process through the ALC educational framework and approach from theory to practice.

What to expect?

  • The session will begin with an in-depth introduction of the ALC framework and agile practices. Our time together will involve learning and practicing the principles of the ALC framework. We will utilize an unconference style format where adult learners will experience what it's like to participate and facilitate in an Agile Learning Center by self-directing our own learning experiences from emerging needs and curiosities. In the last 4 days we will move into direct facilitation practice by running a camp for young people. Our days will begin and end with intention-setting and reflection. Most importantly, we will foster connection and have a lot of fun in our time together.

Program Breakdown (2 options)

Theory. Thursday, June 7th - Monday, June 10th (5 Days) $350, 8:30a-4p

Join us for a five day introduction to facilitation and Agile Learning. We’ll follow the rhythm Heartwood keeps during school days: morning intention-setting, daily exploring, then regrouping in the afternoon to reflect. Experienced facilitators will make offerings to share the theory and practices supporting Agile Learning Centers. Participants will be invited to make and request offerings based on personal interests and passions. These days won't be all about philosophy. We will play games and do activities to develop and encourage community and connection with each other as well.

To be clear, the immersive ALC days will have no predetermined agenda items. You will co-create the experience with us. Offerings are not limited to theory based discussions. You and others can make offerings that involve movement, the arts, literacy, mathematics, group games — anything.

Theory & Practice. Thursday, June 7th - Friday, June 15th  (9 Days) $550, 8:30a-4p

There's only so much theorizing to do. A huge part is experimenting, being iterative, and continuously growing and changing. So, in addition to the Theory portion there will be an additional 4 days that will consist of actually playing the part of facilitator and simulating a week of school. Students will be present and you will get the chance to practice the ideas we've talked about in the days prior. Adults will remain after students depart to engage in reflection and peer-review.

Frequently Asked questions

  • Will I be able to work in an ALC after attending this program?
    • We can’t guarantee that. The ALC Network doesn’t manage the hiring practices of the various ALCs, nor is there a standardized prerequisite for being hired as an ALF. There aren’t prescribed jobs awaiting those who attend an ALF Summer. That said, the ALF Summer programs we are offering in various regions are designed to serve as a catalyst into this work, primarily through our support of self-organized ALC Startups that have already become ALC Network members. What we are offering is both a foundations workshop where you will be informed about ALC as well as immersive experiences. You will be a big part of determining what comes next!
  • I want to open an ALC. Will attendance at Heartwood ALC's ALF Summer allow me to do this?
    • Let us know on your application if you would like to attend as a start-up ALC and we’ll go from there. You will need to get the basic ALC Network membership at the very least, and then your participation in this program will only help you on your way to becoming a full-fledged ALC.
